Artist's Inspiration:
Sneakers
I love cats. What a marvelous convergence of beauty, power, grace and agility! Mountain lions are fantastic jumpers. Their extra long hind legs make a vertical leap of 15’ or 45’ horizontally easy for them. Unlike their African cousin they purr and scream instead of roar. Stealth is the attribute for which I chose this one’s name.
The found object steel materials chosen have meaning. The springs in the rear legs and torso are for those jumps. A close inspection of the golf clubs on all 4 feet indicate this is likely a female. The meat grinder in the stomach is to process the 35 to 40 deer she will consume this year. Although the salad tongs in her cheeks betray the all-meat image we are given. The rat trap is because a cat should be able to catch a mouse, in this case a large one.
Aside from the unusual materials involved the most unique thing about Sneakers is her eyes. Flip the switch under her belly and she really comes alive! That is why she is such an excellent night hunter.
With regard to our own spiritual vision consider Jesus’ teaching: “Your eye is a lamp for your body. A pure eye lets sunshine into your soul. But an evil eye shuts out the light and plunges you into darkness. Make sure that the light you think you have is not really darkness. If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight is shining on you.”
